Historic Downtown Lithonia

Cultural / Art Buildings   |   Historic   |   Neighborhoods   |   Restaurants   |   Small Retail

While many Georgia towns offer “red brick” historic districts, Downtown Lithonia offers something visually distinct: Granite. Known as “Granite City,” this commercial block is constructed largely from locally quarried Lithonia Gneiss, giving the storefronts a unique, textured, and slightly grittier aesthetic than the typical polished Southern downtown. The 6900 block is a preserved row of single-story commercial storefronts that feels frozen in time. It is authentic, working-class, and versatile enough to play as a 1970s Rust Belt town, a Western frontier street, or a rural 1950s main drag.

Visual Features & Key Areas

  • The Storefronts (6959-6971 Block): A contiguous row of attached commercial bays. The architecture is a mix of painted brick and rough-cut stone masonry. The facades feature large plate-glass display windows, recessed entryways, and vintage signage opportunities.
  • The Stone Texture: Unlike the red clay brick of Marietta or Covington, Lithonia’s buildings often feature gray, speckled granite masonry. This unique color palette reads colder and more industrial on camera, making it perfect for “hardscrabble” storytelling.
  • The Streetscape: Main Street here is relatively narrow and intimate, creating a “canyon” effect with the buildings. It is pedestrian-friendly with wide sidewalks.
  • Lithonia Plaza: Directly across the street is a mid-century style open-air shopping plaza (built c. 1968) with a massive parking lot. This provides a stark visual contrast between the historic 1900s row and the 1960s strip mall.
  • The Railroad: The active CSX rail line runs parallel to Main Street (one block over), adding to the industrial/transport hub atmosphere.

Production Logistics

  • Permitting: This area falls under the City of Lithonia. You must clear permits through the Lithonia City Clerk. While DeKalb County (DEC) can assist with initial inquiries, the City has final jurisdiction over street closures and parking control.
  • Parking & Base Camp: One of the biggest assets of this location is the adjacent Lithonia Plaza lot. Subject to owner permission, this massive paved area is often used for base camp, crew parking, or catering, meaning you can park your trucks less than 100 feet from the set.
  • Intermittent Traffic Control (ITC): Main Street is not a major commuter artery compared to nearby highways, making ITC and full street closures easier to negotiate here than in busier metro hubs.
  • Sound: Be advised: The railroad tracks are active. Heavy freight trains pass frequently and will impact audio recording.
